NORTH ISLAND NEURO
Neurofeedback
for individuals on
Vancouver Island who are looking to improve their brain health.
Our brain is the primary control centre of our human vessel that communicates with not only our entire physical body via the spinal cord, but with our experience of reality as a whole. If the energy in our brain is not firing efficiently and effectively, it can disrupt many, and potentially, all aspects of our life.
The brain is an incredible super computer that governs the way we think, learn, create memories, make decisions, and integrate our everyday reality. It is also is directly connected to how we behave, communicate, physically move, connect to others, express our emotions, and overall express ourselves wholly and authentically.
So, since our brain is this incredible super computer, shouldn’t it be able to completely heal itself? Well, a great way to look at this is within human nature itself. We humans need data and feedback from our outer reality to know if our actions are aligned with our highest good, so that we can make better choices in the future. It is how we learn and adapt in this world, and the brain works in a similar way. If it isn’t receiving direct feedback about how it is operating, then it there is no need for it to make any shifts. So, when it does receive real-time feedback of how it is operating, then it can determine if a shift is needed to be made in order for it to function, and self-regulate more efficiently.
Why Is Brain Health So Important?
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback, is a brain training system that gives the brain real-time feedback about how it is operating. It supports the brain and central nervous system with self-regulation and finding new ideal neural pathways. The NeurOptimal® technology used at North Island Neuro understands the mathematics and language of the brain, and its design is based on the concept that when the brain is given feedback about its own patterns, it can self-correct its own inefficiencies. The technology reads the unique frequency patterns of an individual’s brain in real-time and communicates directly back to their central nervous system through an audio track.
When the NeurOptimal® technology picks up on an individual’s brain going off track, or making an inefficient choice, an interruption will occur in the audio (similar to a record skipping). The interruption in the audio track is a direct communication to the brain that the outer environment is shifting, which gently invites the central nervous system to choose a different neural pathway, or to begin creating a new one.
Why Does This Work?
Our brain is naturally incredibly flexible and resilient. It is always searching for the most efficient and optimal way to process reality. For instance, if we were to do the same task 10 times, the brain’s natural tendency for finding the most optimal variables will ensure that the task will be done slightly differently every single time, with the objective to have the task be completed more efficiently each time. However, depending on one’s life circumstances, actions, and environment, the brain can become stuck and dependent on using less than optimal neural pathway variables, therefore making the brain less flexible and less resilient.
The feedback loop from the skipping in the audio track acts as a real-time reflection for the brain to understand how it is functioning, creating a gentle yet clear interruption for the neural pathways, which gives the brain the option to make a new choice, therefore supporting the central nervous system in returning to its natural flexibility and resilience.
Neuroplasticity and It’s Role.
Neuroplasticity, put very simply, is the brains ability to adjust and adapt depending on one’s environment. An amazing thing about neruoplasticity is that its function supports us with surviving in very harsh conditions. Whether someone has faced emotional or physical trauma, injury, etc. the brains neuroplasticity function will rewire the brain to support the individual in coping with the trauma.
This function, though incredible in terms of survival, can negatively impact the way we operate in life, because once we are no longer in survival mode, the brain is still functioning with its new rewriting that was created during the traumatic experience. The exciting part about this though, is that neuroplasticity also works in the opposite way, and is the exact same function that allows our brain to rewire itself and grow back healthy neural structures. The growth and healing of our neural structures occurs through learning, being exposed to new environments, exercise, self-care, mindfulness, allowing our nervous systems to rest, and of course, training our brains. This is where neurofeedback training comes in.
Another Interesting Fact About The Brain.
Scientists were under the impression that synaptic pruning (the brains process of clearing and removing less optimal neural pathways) only happened in children. Though, modern science has now proved through recent studies that the brain is still in fact going through this synaptic pruning process in adulthood. On top of that, this pruning process is encouraged when the brain is being trained and rewired to develop new optimal neural pathways. The new optimal pathways are naturally strengthened and supported by the brain, and the more of them that are created, the more less optimal pathways are pruned away. However, if the brain is creating hardly any new optimal neural pathways, then it will keep using the less optimal neural pathways that it has adapted itself to. This research proves to us that no matter your age, your brain is always shifting, adapting, and growing to the best of its ability, which empowers us to realize that our brain is something we can always work with and develop to improve our lives.
How Often Is Neurofeedback Needed?
Everyone’s situation is completely unique. Depending on each person’s needs, and the state of their brain, the answer to this will vary. Since we are quite literally retraining our brain with neurofeedback, it is often best to have an average of 20 training sessions, and a minimum of 6 sessions fairly close together, in order to experience the most beneficial shift. It is no different than if you were going to a gym to train your muscles. For the most noticeable shift and growth of your muscles, you will need to train more often, in a shorter span of time. The difference between muscles and neural pathways though, is that when positive neural pathways are created, they are naturally ‘fed’ and strengthened by the brain, and will not breakdown in the same way as muscles in the body. Therefore, some clients may feel like 6-20 sessions is enough to transform their lives, and others may feel they would benefit from 20-40 sessions, as well as follow-up training months or years later.
This being said, the depth of meditation and self regulation that is possible from just one session alone is a wonderful act of self care. Now, even though one session will not necessarily have long lasting changes for your neural pathways, it is an amazing way to wind down after a stressful week, find your centre, and bring yourself back into a deep state of rest and restoration.

Ultimately, neurofeedback is for people of all ages who are interested in developing new, efficient, neural pathways, and would benefit from strengthening their central nervous systems ability to self regulate.
More specifically, neurofeedback has been shown to be very supportive for the central nervous system of those individuals who are showing symptoms of, or are diagnosed with;
Who Can Benefit From Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback has also been known to support individuals with processing and integrating repressed emotions due to trauma and grief.
It is even known to support athletes, musicians, and any other professionals who are looking to gain optimal performance through strengthening their neural functioning.
Each session will begin with setting an intention for what you are hoping to shift in your life.
Next, you will find a comfortable position, either laying down or on a slight incline as if you were about to start a very relaxing meditation.
6 small sensor pads will be gently placed onto your head and ears with a conductive paste that allows the pads to stick comfortably.
These sensors are connected to the NeurOptimal® technology which will be reading your real-time brain frequencies and communicating back to the brain via interruptions in the music throughout the whole session.
All you do is sit back relax, and enjoy the 35 minute meditative experience!
The amount of skipping and the length of audio silence will vary for each individual.
The meditative music will allow your brain to relax into an alpha or theta state, which can support deeper subconscious healing.
Each session, including set-up and integration will be an hour long, unless extra integration time is needed

About
North Island Neuro
Welcome!
My name is Athena, and I am the founder, operator, and primary trainer at North Island Neuro. Throughout my own journey of processing deep repressed trauma, and coming full circle from undiagnosed mental health scares and addictions, I have learned first hand how absolutely fundamental and essential a healthy brain is and how many peoples most embodied and peaceful selves are being repressed and hindered due to their brains not functioning at its highest potential.
I am so passionate about the neurofeedback technology from NeurOptimal® because it is the only neurofeedback device that is not forcefully trying to change your brain. All other types of neurofeedback are performed by a technician with a very clear goal to ‘correct’ certain areas of the brain, which to me sounds incredibly invasive and traumatizing and is even known to have many potential side-effects. The NeurOptimal® technology not only is incredibly gentle, non-invasive, and effective, it has NO negative side-effects. Offering this Neurofeedback technology brings me such great purpose and passion, because it is an incredibly accessible way to help everyone and anyone on their life path, and my goal is to bring this technology to as many people as I can.
I have designed the company so that NeurOptimal® neurofeedback can be accessible for anyone in the Northern Vancouver Island area from the comfort their own home. These sessions must be done in person, therefore, my schedule will be one full of travel to various areas of Vancouver Island from the Parksville area, all the way up north to Campbell River.
I am always willing to go on a new adventure, and am passionate about helping those who are in need of this type of support, so if you live on a local gulf island, further up north, out in the the Ucluelet/Tofino area, or South Vancouver Island, please still reach out to see if I can accommodate. The more clients booking for neurofeedback in one area, the more likely I can accommodate.
Please note as well, I have access to an office in Nanoose Bay, BC for very limited days a week if you would prefer to travel to me instead.
***Pricing will vary depending on the location, so please reach out directly for more information on scheduling and pricing.***
I look forward to supporting you on your brain training journey!
